How to Carry Out a Nevada Business Entity Search

Nevada Business Entity Search

If you’ve been researching states to start a company in, then you might’ve been confused when you came across Nevada. Whether its economy is doing well or not depends on who you ask.

On one hand, the state has the highest unemployment rate around. But on the other, there’s been 32 straight months of over $1 billion in gaming revenue. So it’s up to you to decide if you want to take a gamble.

Still want to push forward? Then you’ll want to do a Nevada business entity search. It’ll tell you which company names are already taken, so you can proceed with peace of mind.

Here are the steps you should take.

The Secretary of State will have all records of state businesses since they’re responsible for the registrations.

So visit the Nevada Secretary of State’s website to get started. Click on SilverFlume, Nevada’s business portal, then scroll to the bottom to click on “Business entity search.” What’s great about the Nevada Secretary of State business entity search is that also searches trademarks, so you don’t have to do a separate search for that.

At the top, you can search by name. The criteria for the name search are starts with, contains, exact match, or all words.

If you don’t have a business name, then you can use the business entity search criteria boxes. You can type in the:

  • Entity number
  • NV business ID number (either individual or organization)
  • Officer first, middle, and last name
  • Registered agent name

After that is the marks search criteria if you’d like to use that instead. You’ll type in the mark number, select the classification, goods and services, and applicant name.

At this point, you can click on “search” to generate results or you can use the advanced search options. You can toggle between all, show only business entity information, or show only mark information. Also, you can select the type and status of the business.

Whichever option you use, the next page will give you any relevant hits. In addition to the name of the business, you’ll see prior name matches, statuses, compliance holds, filing dates, types, NV business IDs, entity numbers, mark numbers, and actions.

Bring up more information by clicking on a specific company name. The following page will show you things like the registered agent’s name, status, type, and addresses (street and mailing).

Turn to Google

If your State of Nevada business entity search didn’t turn up with anything, don’t stop just yet. You want to be extra sure that no one has taken your desired business name, so you’ll also want to do a Nevada business search by using Google.

In the search bar, put in your future business name with “Nevada.” You can also include a city name if it’s relevant.

Click through the results pages to see if anyone has come up with the same name already. You should also factor in similar names, as they can be close enough to cause legal issues.

This is also the perfect chance to snatch up any domain names or social media handles that match with your company name.
