Indiana business entity search

In 2023, Indiana had its seventh record-breaking year for economic development. Also, Forbes named Indiana as the number one state to start a business in that year. As you can clearly see, this state offers a wealth of opportunities, so if you’ve been thinking about entrepreneurship, then act fast and don’t let this prime opportunity get away.

Do you already know which industry you want to get into? Then great! You can then get started on creating your company, which starts with finding the perfect name.

Part of this process involves performing an Indiana business entity search. Here are several ways you can carry out this task.

You can do an IN business entity search by using the INBiz page, which is on the Secretary of State’s Business Services Division website.

First, choose whether you’d like to search by “contains,” “starts with,” or “exact match.” Then, you can type in either the:

  • Business name
  • Business ID
  • Filing number
  • Registered agent name
  • Incorporator or governing person name

To do an even more thorough search, you can fill out the “Advanced search” boxes before hitting “Search.” These search boxes let you select and fill out the business:

  • Type
  • Status
  • Name type
  • Street address

Whatever you choose, you’ll get a results page for any matches. You’ll see the following information for each business:

  • Business ID
  • Business name
  • Name type
  • Entity type
  • Principal office address
  • Registered agent name
  • Status

To learn more about any entity, click on the business ID number. This will take you to a more detailed page with information such as the creation date, inactive date, jurisdiction of formation, business entity report due date, years due, and governing person information. At the bottom, you can click for the entity’s filing history, name history, assumed name history, and certified copies request.

Try a Search Engine

Another way you can do a State of Indiana business entity search is to use a search engine. Put in your desired business name, plus “Indiana”; you can also add a city name if that’s relevant.

Scroll through the results to see if anything’s remotely the same, as that’s enough to get you in legal trouble sometimes. This is also a great time to see if social media handles and domain names are available, as you’ll want everything to match.

Use Our Site’s Search Tool

What many people don’t know is that they can do an Indiana business search on our site. We have a tool on our business registration service page, where you can check out all the services we offer, along with the associated costs. The best thing is that the business registration process itself is free, and you only have to pay the state fees!

As for the business search itself, you’ll find the box up top. Just type in the name of your potential company, choose “LLC,” “corporation,” or “PLLC,” and then “Check availability.” The next page will show you whether it’s available, and if it is, you can give us your full name, email, and phone number to proceed with the services.

An Indiana business entity search is free to do, so it certainly doesn’t hurt to check with the Secretary of State first. Then, to do your due diligence, double-check by using your favorite search engine and our tool.

Doing all these steps may seem tedious, but it’s necessary if you smooth sailing for your business opening. Plus, once you’re sure the name’s available, you can leave all the paperwork to us so you don’t have to do a thing.
